So, my new-to-me 2006 GTO had to go into the shop this morning, after I put only 2,500 miles on it (72,500 total miles). The GM dealership called me just now. They said it needs a replacement engine.
Apparently there's coolant getting into the engine and mixing with the oil. Oh, and the radiator's cracked. Anyway, the original engine has to go.
This, kids, is why you buy used cars at Carmax and spring for the extended warranty. I dunno what a new LS2 motor costs. But I know it'll cost me $300, which is my warranty deductible.

Wow, that's surprising. I loathe warranties, but I might end up corvette shopping there for that reason.

Oh...right...thrash the shit out of it like anyone of us would have....
Wise call on the carmax warranty!

Once again, Jalopnik/oppo proves Carmax is the best place to buy used cars.

Super smart choice on the warranty .. Can I buy your old motor / parts from you .? I'm currently putting a 5.3 into my 280z

Well, I don't really have any way to do that. I don't have any place to put the parts. I don't even know if I can keep them.

I'm pretty surprised they didn't catch that in their in-house inspections. I know someone who works at carmax and usually they look things over pretty well.

To hoon or not to hoon that is the question. In this case the hoonage was at least over 9000. (yeah that's right Shakespeare and dragonball references)

And here's the part that everyone in 'Murica forgets whilst fapping over Holdens - they have a habit of falling apart after 60000 miles.

Usually it's the suspension bits that go, not the LS2.

Having owned one for several years now and seeing how some folks treat them, I'm going to bet on the previous owner beating the crap out of it, then "go back to stock" and trading it in. These things are super easy to mod, and super easy to un-mod. I'll bet it had a blower on it, which blew out a gasket, which in turn overheated it. Once they replace the engine, have someone look over the tranny to make sure it's in good condition too. A4 or 6M?

Or the A/C. Or the seats. Or the door panels. Or the ignition system.

6M. Automatic transmissions are for assholes.

While I won't disagree with you, I have been doing perfectly fine with mine. *knocksonwood*

Like others have said the LS2 is the last piece of this car you expect to be broken at 72k.
And also it's not that we forget about "holden problems"
We never had the opportunity to learn. While you guys are over there trying to not be killed by everything that moves you at least get "more American" cars than the USA. V8's and RWD!

Good call on the warranty! Back in '06 I bought an '04 GTO with 5200 miles on it. It was a CPO with a warranty. I only kept the car three and a half months, because in that time it spent 31 days in and out of the shop for various things. I loved that car, and I still miss it, but that thing was a Friday car for sure.
